Riu Plaza New York Times Square
You know what caught me off guard about Riu Plaza New York Times Square?
You know what caught me off guard about Riu Plaza New York Times Square? Walking into the lobby, I actually felt like I could breathe – and that’s saying something in the middle of Manhattan’s theater district chaos. This four-star hotel sits right on 46th Street in Hell’s Kitchen, which honestly used to be pretty sketchy but now it’s where all the smart travelers stay because you get that authentic New York grit without the tourist trap prices of being directly on Times Square.
The location is honestly perfect if you think about it – you’re literally a three-minute walk from all the Broadway madness, but when you duck into the hotel, there’s this immediate sense of calm that I wasn’t expecting. The rooms are what I’d call “European smart” – not massive by American standards, but every inch is actually functional. I mean, the bathroom has this rainfall shower that’s genuinely impressive, and the beds are firm in that way that makes you sleep better than you do at home. What really sold me though was stepping out onto 46th in the morning and realizing I was surrounded by all these little Dominican and Puerto Rican spots that serve incredible coffee for like two bucks, while tourists three blocks over are paying eight dollars for the same thing. The hotel staff clearly knows this too – they’ll point you toward the good stuff if you ask.
I’ll be honest, the elevators can get a bit crowded during peak theater times (think 6-7 PM when everyone’s getting ready for shows), but that’s pretty much unavoidable anywhere in this part of town. The rooftop situation is solid though – not Instagram-famous like some of the flashier places, but you get actual views of the Empire State Building without fighting crowds of people taking selfies. Hell’s Kitchen has this energy where you feel like you’re staying where New Yorkers actually live and work, rather than in some sanitized tourist bubble. You’ll hear real conversations in Spanish drifting up from the street, smell actual good food cooking, and yeah, it gets a little loud sometimes – but that’s the city, right? If you wanted quiet, you’d stay in Westchester. The 8.6 rating makes total sense to me because this place delivers exactly what it promises without trying to be something it’s not.

The breakfast was the best I’ve ever had at a hotel! The staff, though, was what really made the experience wonderful! Everyone from the bellboy, the front desk, the wait staff at breakfast! All were absolutely kind and helpful!
