You know what really struck me about Hyatt Herald Square New York when I first walked in? It doesn’t try to pretend it’s some grand Manhattan palace – and honestly, that’s exactly why I liked it. This four-star spot sits right on West 31st Street in NoMad, which means you’re basically camping out between the tourist madness of Herald Square and the more grown-up dining scene that’s taken over this neighborhood in recent years.

The lobby’s got this smart, contemporary vibe without being too sterile – I mean, you can tell they’ve put thought into making it feel welcoming rather than just impressive. What I really appreciated was how the staff actually seemed to know the area when I asked about dinner recommendations. They pointed me toward some solid Korean spots on 32nd Street (you’re literally a block from Koreatown’s main strip) and gave me the real talk about which subway entrance to use during rush hour. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from Hyatt – clean lines, decent space for Manhattan standards, and those floor-to-ceiling windows that make even a city view feel worth it. I stayed on the 12th floor and could actually see a sliver of the Empire State Building if I pressed my face against the glass just right.

Here’s the thing about this location that took me a day or two to fully appreciate: you’re close enough to walk to Penn Station in about three minutes, which sounds horrible until you realize it means you can easily escape to Brooklyn for dinner or catch a train out of the city without dealing with crosstown traffic. Plus, the whole Herald Square circus is right there when you want it – Macy’s, all those chain stores, the works – but you can also walk ten minutes south and find yourself in some really excellent cocktail bars that most tourists never discover. The 8.1 rating makes sense to me; it’s not going to blow your mind, but everything works the way it should. The elevators are fast, the WiFi doesn’t cut out during video calls, and checkout was painless. I did notice some street noise on lower floors – it’s New York after all, and 31st Street gets its share of traffic – but nothing a decent pair of earplugs couldn’t handle. Honestly, for the money and the location, you could do a lot worse in this part of Manhattan.
