Walking into Hotel 50 Bowery, part of JdV by Hyatt feels like discovering something you weren’t expecting in the middle of Chinatown’s organized chaos. I mean, you’re literally surrounded by dim sum spots and street vendors selling knockoff designer bags, then suddenly there’s this sleek four-star lobby that somehow doesn’t feel out of place. The building itself is this interesting mix – modern but not trying too hard to scream “luxury hotel,” which honestly works better than you’d think in this neighborhood.
What really struck me was how they’ve managed to capture the energy of New York without making you feel like you’re in some generic Midtown tower. The rooms have these floor-to-ceiling windows that give you real views of the city – not just brick walls three feet away like so many places downtown. You can actually watch Chinatown wake up in the morning, which is something special if you’re an early riser. The soundproofing is surprisingly good too, because let’s be honest, Bowery can get pretty lively at night. I stayed on the eighth floor and barely heard the street noise, though you might catch some kitchen sounds from the restaurants below if you’re on a lower level.
The location is actually perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying in the real New York rather than tourist central. You’re walking distance from Little Italy (though honestly, the better Italian food is probably in the Village), the Lower East Side has some great bars just a few blocks away, and you can catch the 6 train at Canal Street without much hassle. What I loved most was having authentic Chinese breakfast options right outside the door – there’s this place around the corner that does incredible congee, and you know the hotel staff actually knows about these spots instead of just pointing you toward Starbucks. The front desk gave me directions to a proper tea shop that I never would have found on my own.
Check-in was smooth, parking is valet only (which you’d expect in this part of town), and the service feels more personal than what you get at the big chain hotels. The fitness center isn’t huge but it’s got everything you need, and there’s a rooftop space that gives you some decent skyline views. You’re not getting the Empire State Building postcard shot, but you can see how all these neighborhoods connect, which I found more interesting anyway. The whole place has this confident, understated vibe – like it knows it doesn’t need to oversell itself because the location and quality speak for themselves.

Trendy and fashionable hotel
Location is perfect to explore China Town and Little Italy. Lots of food options and things to do nearby. Great for families with larger rooms.
Exceptional
Staff were pleasant and accommodating, room is spacious, great location, pricing is competitive. I really enjoyed my stay and would come back!
What a view
Great room, great view, great location
What could be improved: No offer for children at the drinking buffet
Lovely, quiet stay in the midst of all the hustle and bustle
My partner and I had a wonderful stay. We stayed on the 15th floor and couldn't hear any noise from the street. The tea/coffee services on the 2nd floor (6a-4p) were such a bonus. The breakfast set-up was different than I've had before - ordering from a 3rd party and delivered to hotel - but the food was timely and so delicious. There is also a rooftop bar with a fantastic view. Lastly, it is truly in the heart of Chinatown, so a tasty dumpling is never far.
My partner and I had a blast, but I'm not sure that this hotel would be my top pick for families, as I didn't see any children over the four days. I would absolutely recommend this spot to other adult travelers!
What could be improved: For myself, I do wish that the tea service was available 24/7 (for a late night chamomile). However, this isn't actually a problem!
Great hotel with lovely staff!
Modern, clean, friendly
What could be improved: Busy area, wish there was a breakfast included
Very clean comfortable stay
So clean, check in was quick and easy
What could be improved: Nothing
Wonderful
The room as great and the beds very comfy, it was clean and well maintained. The location for China town was good and also on the doorstep of Little Italy and SoHo.
What could be improved: Breakfast was ordered in from outside, and whilst the cold choices were good the hot food was cold by the time iot was delivered and as there was only a few choices it did get boring.
Great base to explore New York.
Very clean nice size rooms. Good location to see all of New York. Subways stations around the area to get around. Walking distance to financial district and Soho.
What could be improved: The only downside was if you booked to have breakfast it comes in from a third party which you have to order every day. Only a small selection to choose from.
Excellent staff and location
We loved staying there! The staff was amazing and the location was great as well. We were very comfortable and would love to stay there the next time we’re in New York.
What could be improved: Nothing! Excellence all around!
Wonderful
Great location on end of Manhatton bridge with close proximity to lower Manhatton. Staff were excellent and has a great rooftop bar
