TRYP by Wyndham New York City Times Square – Midtown

I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to TRYP by Wyndham New York City Times Square – Midtown on 35th Street, I wasn’t expecting much. The exterior is pretty understated, especially for a four-star place in this part of town. But you know what? Sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re staying in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen.
The location is actually brilliant if you think about it. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Times Square (which, let’s face it, you’ll visit once and then actively avoid), but far enough away that you won’t hear the constant street performers and tourist chaos at 2 AM. I mean, New York is never truly quiet, but this stretch of West 35th is surprisingly manageable for sleeping. The Penn Station proximity is clutch too – I’ve caught early Amtrak trains without breaking a sweat, and there’s something satisfying about rolling your suitcase three blocks instead of wrestling with subway stairs.
What really won me over was how the staff actually seems to get that most guests are dealing with typical New York logistics nightmares. The front desk held my bags for hours after checkout while I wandered around before an evening flight, and they didn’t make me feel like I was asking for a huge favor. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re New York hotel rooms, so don’t expect palatial, but they’re thoughtfully designed. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this), and whoever planned the bathroom layout actually understands that real humans need counter space for their stuff. The WiFi works reliably, which honestly puts it ahead of some fancier places I’ve stayed in Midtown. There’s a fitness center that’s small but has the basics – I used it at 6 AM once and had the whole place to myself, which felt like winning the lottery.
Here’s the thing about staying in Hell’s Kitchen – you’re surrounded by incredible food that isn’t tourist-trap garbage. I grabbed coffee and pastries from a little Dominican place two blocks south most mornings, and there’s legitimate Thai food right around the corner that locals actually eat at. The hotel’s restaurant is fine, but honestly, why would you eat hotel food when you’re surrounded by the real thing? One small heads up though – if you’re driving (and honestly, why would you), parking around here is the usual Manhattan nightmare. But the subway access is solid, and you can walk to basically everything that matters. It’s the kind of place that just works without trying too hard to impress you, which in New York, is actually pretty impressive.

What could be improved: Shower room too small and moldy
Great place to stay!
Spacious, good for family traveling, we are 6 person and fit just right and still have enough room to
Move around
Hopefully I’ll be returning later this year
Great location, clean and good value.
What could be improved: One or two of the front of house staff were less than friendly. For example, vending machine ate my money on two successive occasions only to be told to call the number as it was nothing to do with him. Rude, unhelpful and not consistent with the rest of the stay.
Great location, clean and spacious rooms!
The location was great, and the room was very spacious, which was awesome with a family of 5
What could be improved: Our room wasn’t ready at check-in time and we had to wait for an hour. At that point, the hotel offered us a bigger room that was ready. I appreciated the gesture, but it was frustrating to lose an hour waiting when checkin time is listed at 4pm, and that was what time we arrived. Also, the shower door didn’t close all the way because it was too big for the space.
Good
Close to everywhere!!! Big room !
Very good hotel with reasonable price for Manhattan.
Very close to subway station (only half a block), room was cleaned every single day, very nice size room, AC is good, elevator is very fast, very comfy bed, large bathroom and water pressure is great too.
What could be improved: Love that they provide free water refill but toward end of our trip, the water refill station was broken and they never fixed it
Nice room & clean room
Well placed in btwn manhattan
What could be improved: Room service is very poor
Nice accommodation for the family and pet friendly too.
Perfect location for majority of the tours
What could be improved: Microwave not working properly. Parking does not have in and out privilege.
