The Standard – East Village
I'll be honest – when I first walked up to The Standard - East Village on Cooper Square, I wasn't sure what to expect.
I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to The Standard – East Village on Cooper Square, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The building has this sort of industrial-chic thing going on that could either be really cool or trying too hard, you know? But once I stepped inside, it actually works. The lobby feels like someone’s really stylish friend designed it – not corporate sleek, but not trying to be your quirky aunt either.
What I love about this four-star spot is how it sits right in the heart of everything without feeling touristy. You’re literally steps from St. Marks Place (prepare for some weekend night noise if you’re a light sleeper), but also walking distance to the more grown-up spots around Astor Place. I mean, you can grab coffee at Mud on East 9th in the morning, then hit up the bars on St. Marks at night – it’s that kind of location where you don’t really need to venture far from the hotel. The subway situation is pretty solid too, with the 6 train right there at Astor Place, though honestly, I found myself walking to most places in New York from here.
The rooms have that modern minimalist vibe that The Standard does well – clean lines, good lighting, and bathrooms that don’t make you feel like you’re in a airplane lavatory. Nothing revolutionary, but everything works the way it should, which is more than I can say for some places I’ve stayed in the Village. The staff actually seems to know the neighborhood, which is refreshing. When I asked about late-night food options, the front desk guy didn’t just hand me a generic list – he told me about the bodega around the corner that makes surprisingly good sandwiches until 2am and warned me that the pizza place next door gets crazy loud on weekends (appreciated the heads up). Room service is decent but honestly, with all the food options within a few blocks, I’d just venture out. The rooftop situation is nice when weather cooperates – not the biggest space, but the views toward downtown are pretty solid, especially if you time it right around sunset. Check-in was smooth, no drama, and they let me store bags early which saved my morning when I had a late flight. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere that gets the neighborhood rather than just existing in it.

A little pricey but clean, comfortable and convenient location
King size bed, east village location, nice bar & breakfast restaurant
What could be improved: Didnt know there was complimentary bfast coffee in the lobby - overheard the front desk tell someone else on our second day after we already bought coffee in the restaurant the first day and then went to order room service coffee the second day… point is, nobody told us. For the price of the standard, those details should be more consistent.
Convenient, cool and well located

What could be improved: Room service closes early
My go-to for NYU

Wonderful
The room was comfortable, the staff were very helpful and sweet, the location was excellent. We really enjoyed this hotel.
What could be improved: The room was a bit cool at night, even with extra blankets that we requested. If we go back I would bring one of our blankets and I think that would have made it perfect.
