The Renwick

I’ll be honest – when I first walked into The Renwick, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another Midtown hotel. But this four-star boutique spot on East 40th really surprised me, and I mean that in the best way possible.

The thing about staying in Murray Hill is that you’re right in the thick of everything without the Times Square chaos, and The Renwick gets this balance perfectly. You’re literally a five-minute walk to Grand Central (which, trust me, you’ll appreciate when you’re dragging luggage), and Bryant Park is close enough that I actually found myself grabbing coffee there most mornings instead of staying in the hotel. The building itself has this gorgeous Gothic Revival thing going on – apparently it used to be some kind of residential hotel back in the day, and you can still feel that old New York character in the lobby’s vaulted ceilings and stone work.

What really got me though was how they’ve managed to keep it feeling intimate despite being right on a busy street. The rooms are smaller than what you’d get at those massive chain hotels, but honestly? The design makes every inch count, and there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try to cram in unnecessary furniture. I stayed on the seventh floor and barely heard street noise, which in New York is basically a miracle. The staff actually remembers your name after day two, which sounds small but makes such a difference when you’re coming back exhausted from walking around the city all day. And you know what I really appreciated? They don’t nickel and dime you for every little thing – the WiFi works great, there’s decent coffee in the lobby that doesn’t cost $6, and they’ll actually help you figure out subway directions without making you feel like a tourist idiot.

Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with flashy amenities or rooftop pools, but sometimes you just want a solid place to sleep that feels like someone put actual thought into it. The Renwick does that well, plus you’re walking distance to some genuinely great food spots that most visitors never find because they’re stuck in the hotel district bubble. If you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re staying somewhere with a bit of personality rather than just a place to crash between sightseeing, this works really well.
