The Mayfair Hotel Times Square, an Ascend Collection
You know what caught me off guard about The Mayfair Hotel Times Square, an Ascend Collection?
You know what caught me off guard about The Mayfair Hotel Times Square, an Ascend Collection? It actually feels like a real hotel instead of just another tourist trap dumped into the Theater District chaos. I mean, when you’re walking down West 49th between Broadway and 8th Avenue, you expect to dodge street performers and overpriced souvenir shops – but stepping into this three-star place is honestly like finding a pocket of calm in all that madness.
The lobby has this sort of old-school New York vibe without trying too hard, if that makes sense. Not fancy enough to make you feel underdressed, but definitely a step up from those sterile chain places that all look identical. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to get that most guests are here for shows – they’re used to people rushing out at 7:30 PM or stumbling back in after midnight still buzzing about whatever they just saw. The front desk guy actually knew which theaters were dark on which nights, which saved me from a very embarrassing walk to a closed Majestic Theater one Monday.
Here’s the thing about staying in this part of New York – you’re going to hear sirens, you’re going to hear people, and honestly? That’s part of the experience. But the rooms face different directions, and I got lucky with one overlooking the interior courtyard area, so it was surprisingly quiet for the location. The beds are decent (not amazing, but you’re not paying Plaza prices either), and there’s actually enough space to open a suitcase without doing yoga moves around it. Small details matter when you’re in the city for three days and living out of luggage – like having enough outlets near the bed and a bathroom that doesn’t require you to be a contortionist.
What really sold me on this place was the location specifics that you don’t realize until you’re there. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the TKTS steps, which means last-minute show tickets are totally doable. Ellen’s Stardust Diner is around the corner if you want singing waiters with your breakfast (touristy but fun), and there’s a decent deli on 8th Avenue that stays open late for those post-theater munchie runs. The subway situation is perfect too – you’ve got the N, Q, R, W, S lines right at Times Square-42nd, plus the 1, 2, 3 at Times Square, so getting anywhere in the city is straightforward even if you’re not a subway expert.
Look, this isn’t where you come for a spa weekend or Instagram-worthy rooftop views. But if you want to be in the thick of things without paying through the nose, and you appreciate a place that knows what it is and does it well, The Mayfair gets it right. I’ve stayed in fancier places in the city that felt soulless, and I’ve definitely stayed in cheaper places that made me question my life choices. This one hits that sweet spot where you feel like you’re experiencing actual New York energy without the constant stress of wondering if your hotel room is going to be a disaster.

Decent spot to stay in Manhattan. Great location
Great spot for a single traveler.
Do it
Was shocked by the 3 star rating compared to what the hotel actually offered
What could be improved: New York is expensive. So paying this in general was annoying. The rooms are small but S my expectations were low, pleasantly surprised
Good

Central location, near Times Square. Room is small, but ok. Tea and coffee machine at reception.
Very Good

What could be improved: the size of the room, it shouldn’t have met the standard for two people!

What could be improved: Nil
Very Good

What could be improved: Room was tiny
Delighted with the location & price will come again!
Location! And cleanliness
What could be improved: Uneven floor & lack of coffee in room
Pretty good. Best location and friendly staff
It was in time square and the staff at the front desk made it feel like home. Truly friendly and welcoming.
What could be improved: The room was small. I expected a bit of room but besides that the bed was comfortable and everthing worked. We didn’t have a view due to construction so the room felt like night the whole time. My daughter (7) loved it in there
We had a very pleasant stay, we enjoyed our room and the social areas without crowds or noise, despite the construction
Great location, very clean and comfortable room. Friendly staff made us feel welcome. Coffee available 24/7.
