The Maritime Hotel
You know what caught me off guard about The Maritime Hotel?
You know what caught me off guard about The Maritime Hotel? Walking up West 16th Street in Chelsea, you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking – but then you spot those distinctive porthole windows, and suddenly you realize you’re staring at what looks like a ship that somehow landed in New York. I mean, the building used to be the National Maritime Union building, so the nautical theme actually makes sense, but it’s still pretty wild seeing a four-star hotel that looks like it sailed straight out of the harbor.
The rooms are honestly smaller than you’d expect – think ship cabin vibes, which is intentional but still takes some getting used to. Everything’s built into the walls in this clever, compact way that somehow doesn’t feel cramped once you settle in. The round windows are the real star though; there’s something oddly soothing about looking out at Chelsea through a porthole while you’re getting ready in the morning. I actually loved how quiet it was on the 16th Street side – you’re close enough to the Meatpacking District buzz but far enough that you’re not dealing with constant sirens at 2 AM. The lobby has this cozy, almost clubby feel with dark wood and maritime artwork that could easily veer into cheesy territory, but they pull it off well.
What really sold me on this place was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. When I asked about breakfast spots, the front desk guy didn’t just hand me a generic list – he mentioned that Café Grumpy around the corner opens early if I needed coffee before 8, and that Chelsea Market gets crazy on weekends but is perfect for wandering on weekday mornings. The whole area’s gotten so trendy over the past few years, with the High Line literally a five-minute walk away, but The Maritime feels like it was cool before cool was even a thing here. Parking‘s going to cost you (this is Manhattan, after all), but honestly, you don’t need a car – the A/C/E trains at 14th Street are right there, and you can walk to basically everything worth seeing in this part of town. It’s one of those hotels that feels distinctly New York without trying too hard, if that makes sense.
Travelers should reserve a hotel in New York at least three months ahead for major events like marathons and holiday celebrations, ensuring the best rates and prime locations near popular Manhattan attractions.

Comfortable cozy room. Throughly enjoyable hotel. Will stay again.
The room has a masculine vibe due to the wood paneling. Cozy but roomy. Very comfortable bed. Nice closet space. Location is close to the High Line which is lovely to walk in the morning.
What could be improved: Saturday night the outside traffic noise was a little loud but is it NYC so not much you can do about that. The other nights were fine.
Great location, great staff, had everything we needed.

Comfortable, welcoming, and reasonably priced hotel in Chelsea, with easy access to all of NYC
With a great nautical theme, the Maritime Hotel was fantastic. Across the street from the Chelsea Market and walking distance to all of the great restaurants and shops in Chelsea and the West Village. Don't let the flight of stairs up to the lobby from street level scare you. The hotel provides assistance with your bags. And once in the lobby you are greeting by a very welcoming and friendly staff and several cozy seating areas. You will love the nautical theme carried over to your room, with a large porthole window. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. All in all, a wonderful stay and I will definitely stay there again on my return to NYC.
