The Hotel Chelsea
Walking into The Hotel Chelsea on West 23rd Street feels like stepping into one of those places that's seen everything – and I mean everything.
Walking into The Hotel Chelsea on West 23rd Street feels like stepping into one of those places that’s seen everything – and I mean everything. This four-star boutique spot sits right in the heart of Chelsea, and honestly, the building itself tells stories better than most tour guides. You know that feeling when you’re somewhere that’s got genuine character instead of just trying to look trendy? That’s this place.
The rooms have this perfect balance of historic charm and modern comfort that’s actually hard to pull off. I love how they’ve kept some of the original architectural details – the high ceilings and those gorgeous windows – while making sure everything works the way you’d want it to in 2024. The bathrooms are surprisingly spacious for New York, which anyone who’s stayed in Manhattan knows is no small feat. What really gets me though is how quiet it stays despite being on a pretty busy street. I was expecting typical city noise, but the rooms are well-insulated, and you can actually sleep without earplugs.
The neighborhood around here is fantastic if you want to feel like you’re living in the city rather than just visiting it. You’re a quick walk to the High Line – which gets crazy crowded on weekends, so go early – and there’s this whole cluster of galleries and coffee shops that locals actually use. The Flatiron District is practically next door, and Union Square is close enough that you’ll find yourself wandering over there for the farmer’s market without really planning to. Parking is typical Manhattan nightmare stuff, but the subway access is solid with multiple lines nearby. I’ve stayed here a couple times now, and what keeps bringing me back is that it strikes this rare balance between feeling special and feeling real – you’re not paying for marble lobbies and white-gloved service, but you’re getting something better: a place with actual soul that happens to be really well-run. The staff knows the neighborhood inside and out, check-in is smooth, and they’ll give you restaurant recommendations that aren’t just the obvious tourist spots.

Wonderful it was our 40th wedding anniversary!
The suite we had was gorgeous with the amazing work done by craftsmen in the yesteryears.
What could be improved: Located on East 23rd it was obvious after a brief walk that the area was not very conducive.
Iconic, historic and luxurious. Absolute perfection.
Iconic, historic, legendary hotel with luxury experience, in a great location for exploring.
The decor is beautiful, original features respectfully restored and in keeping with original design.
We had a room with balcony next to the sign ! Bath tub and seated area. Staff were so helpful and friendly and made our stay perfect, we were given complimentary room upgrade and wine as we were staying at the Chelsea to get married.
Steps away from subway. Ideal place to explore the more interesting neighbourhoods in Manhattan and avoid the traditional tourist areas. An easy subway ride over to Brooklyn too. Chelsea flea and Chelsea market around the corner.
What could be improved: Absolutely nothing about the hotel !!!
Perfect in every way.
However, the staff at the Chelsea cafe weren’t as friendly and helpful as the hotel. Our waitress was pretty grumpy and made our wedding day breakfast uncomfortable. We didn’t go back to eat there again, even though the food was delicious.
Exceptional
Great location, beautiful room, very helpful and nice staff. The entire experience was amazing as the hotel is very beautiful.
Overall a great stat with helpful staff in great surroundings. We enjoyed the gym, the bar and the restaurants
Beautifully renovated- this was my second stay and love the rooms and location
What could be improved: V small niggle - please replace the tubes of toiletries and have shower caps that don’t break on first use - I got thru 5 in a week which felt wasteful but everyone broke
My expectations were exceed.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this beautiful, historic hotel. The staff was great and the room was perfect. Also, the bed was unbelievably comfortable.
Very Good
What could be improved: Poor sound insulation, you hear people talking two rooms away…
Great stay!
The location was great, staff was awesome, the Chelsea Suite was beautiful and comfortable. The Lobby Bar was fantastic! We didn’t get to the restaurants but we will next time.
What could be improved: The elevators are very slow and it can be a long wait. We were on the 3rd floor so we mostly used the stairs.
Loved the atmosphere and kind and supportive staff
Everything
What could be improved: Nothing
Hotel Chelsea - WOW and Thank You. We'll be Back.
When I booked at this hotel, I had no idea of its status as an iconic hotel. I booked for its location and online photos. Traveling with my 30-something daughter for a long weekend, we wanted to pack in as many visits as possible to the different neighborhoods, eateries, shows, museums, parks and NYC hot spots. The hotel is in a perfect location, with nearby subway stations, quick taxi availability and easy walking to great restaurants, bars, shopping, parks and museums. The hospitality at the hotel is phenomenal. On arrival, after delayed flights and re-routing, our weary selves were greeted by two amazing, friendly and efficient front desk staff, Te'a and Clint, who's kind professionalism made us feel right at home, in good hands and fully informed about what services and options the hotel offered. We booked a dinner for the next night in the cafe, and it was a winner! The room was big and the amenities were generous. Housekeeping services were exceptional with nightly turndown service. This hotel is a real gem. I'll read the book, Inside the Dream Palace before my next stay. There's so much to learn and know about the Hotel Chelsea!
