The Historic Blue Moon Hotel – NYC

I'll be honest – when I first walked into The Historic Blue Moon Hotel - NYC, I wasn't sure what to expect from a four-star place tucked away on the Lower East Side.

I’ll be honest – when I first walked into The Historic Blue Moon Hotel – NYC, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a four-star place tucked away on the Lower East Side. But you know what? This little gem completely surprised me. The lobby has this perfect blend of old New York character and modern touches that doesn’t feel forced or overdone like some boutique hotels try to do. The brick walls are original, and you can actually feel the history in the building – apparently it dates back to the early 1900s, and they’ve done a really thoughtful job preserving that vintage charm while making everything feel fresh.

The location is honestly one of the best parts about staying here. You’re right in the heart of what makes the Lower East Side special – I mean, you can walk to Katz’s Deli in about three minutes (trust me, I timed it), and there’s this incredible little coffee shop called Dimes Market just around the corner that most tourists never find. The neighborhood has this amazing energy, especially on weekends when the vintage shops and galleries are buzzing. Sure, it can get a bit lively at night since you’re surrounded by some fantastic bars and restaurants, but the hotel’s windows are surprisingly good at keeping the street noise out. I actually slept better here than I expected to.

What really won me over, though, was how the staff seemed to genuinely know their stuff about New York. The front desk guy – I think his name was Marcus – gave me directions to this hole-in-the-wall dumpling place that I never would’ve discovered on my own. The rooms themselves are on the smaller side, which is pretty standard for Manhattan, but they’re cleverly designed with these built-in storage solutions that actually make sense. The bathrooms have this gorgeous subway tile work that feels authentically New York without being cliché about it. And honestly, for the price point and the neighborhood, you’re getting solid value – especially considering you’re walking distance from both the Williamsburg Bridge and some of the city’s best nightlife. I mean, where else can you grab world-class bagels for breakfast, spend the afternoon exploring art galleries, and then hit up speakeasy-style cocktail bars all within a few blocks of your hotel? The whole experience just feels authentically New York in a way that the bigger Midtown hotels never quite capture.

New York hotels provide guests with comfortable accommodations in this never-sleeping city, known for its Broadway shows, world-class museums, and legendary shopping districts.

Comfortable and spacious room in an excellent location for exploring the city. However, would not stay there again given

Great location, very nice room. Comfortable, clean, and spacious.

What could be improved: The hotel is right above a loud night club which makes it difficult to sleep. Also they required us to pay $30 to check in early even though the room was available and clean. Further, they has no secure place to store luggage after we checked out. They store their luggage in a staircase of the hotel that the front desk is not watching.

fun, eccentric hotel in great area

They allowed us to keep our bags in the lobby outside of our stay, the room was a great size and the bed was huge and extremely comfortable. Great value for money and lots of great cafes/restaurants and shops right outside the hotel

Excellent value for money in a retro hotel.

Good size room with personal digital access code. Very comfortable bed and bathroom was clean and bright. Staff are very helpful and courteous. Hotel is in a good location only a 5 min walk to the nearest subway and a choice of bars and cafes all within the local area.

What could be improved: No safe in room they are located in the basement area and housekeeping has to be requested if you require a daily clean.

No place like it.

This place is a vibe. There is nothing like it. The people who run it are characters. The food is amazing. Super confortable rooms and bigger than you would expect. I was surprised to find this place. This will be my go to in NYC now.

Great location, great boutique hotel, lovely history and detail.

Small boutique hotel, great detail, comfortable room.

What could be improved: Didn’t understand the stove in the middle of my room. No vent, small sink, no real kitchen wares so why?

We loved our stay, it was a charming hotel with a kind staff.

Very nice boutique hotel. The owner showed us his personal art on the walls and was very friendly. The young man at the front desk was super helpful and friendly as well. A train station is a couple blocks away. Plenty of great restaurants around.

What could be improved: The shower pressure was a little low but did the job, I understand it’s an old building.

Beautiful hotel, great location, would come back!

The Historic Blue Moon hotel is a beautiful building! We so appreciate the preservation and the little details that went into the space. Staff was kind and there is always someone at the front desk. Location was prime and we never fell short of finding things to do. Additionally, we were surprised at how quiet it was at night despite it being a busy street.

What could be improved: The doors do slam quite loudly so we often heard our neighbors or the housekeeping folks who went in and out. Also, not a big deal but wanting to note there is no microwave in the rooms or ice.

Beautifully restored hotel, but had negative interactions with Staff.

The hotel is decorated nicely, theme of the rooms are cute.

What could be improved: The staff made an error during check-in and assigned us to the wrong room. There were no problems until our last night when we discovered staff had entered our room without our knowledge or permission to, “check if someone who shouldn’t be there is staying there.” Our contact information was on file at the front desk, and instead of waiting for us to return to rectify the issue, staff entered our room and looked around while our belongings were not put away because we had our “Do Not Disturb” sign posted and assumed that would be honored. When we returned, they incessantly implied that we asked for/switched to a different room upon check-in. Then staff came up to our room again, asking if we had been in the room our whole stay or had just switched rooms. My husband went downstairs to investigate the issue further to which they asked again if we switched rooms - which was when we found out they went into our room while we were gone, leading us to believe they were never going to inform us of this fact. What was once a lovely trip is now soured by this invasion of privacy, something I believe is valuable to the establishment as well as the staff’s inability to accept THEY had made the mistake. Furthermore upon checkout, our car did not have space on the street to load our belongings so we asked for display signs to be moved to the sidewalk to utilize the Hotel’s “Loading/Unloading Zone” where our vehicle was approached multiple times by the Owner and Staff to say I couldn’t park there to which I repeated multiple times that I was not parking and in fact, loading luggage in the designated zone. Staff continued to rush my husband and I out of their hotel despite the fact that my husband has a visible, physical disability that requires walking assistance with a cane. It’s a shame to have missed a private tour with the Owner of the establishment but we will not be returning. Thank you.
