First Impressions
Walking into the JW Marriott Essex House New York feels like stepping into old Hollywood glamour — but with all the modern touches you actually want. The Art Deco lobby immediately tells you this isn’t just another Midtown hotel trying too hard to impress. I mean, when a place has been anchoring Central Park South since 1931, it doesn’t need to shout about its pedigree. The marble floors and soaring ceilings speak for themselves, honestly.
That Central Park South Magic
You know what’s wild about staying right on Central Park South? You’re literally across the street from the park, but you’re also smack in the middle of everything that makes New York electric. Columbus Circle is a two-minute walk — which means Lincoln Center, Time Warner Center, and some of the city’s best shopping are right there. The subway connections at 59th Street make getting anywhere ridiculously easy, though honestly, you might find yourself just walking everywhere because the location is that perfect.
The Luxury Suite Experience
The rooms here — well, let’s just say they get it right. My room had those floor-to-ceiling windows that frame Central Park like a living painting, and the marble bathrooms feel properly indulgent without being over-the-top. What I really appreciated was how they’ve updated everything (the tech, the bedding, the fixtures) while keeping that classic five-star elegance intact. The beds are exactly what you’d expect from a luxury property of this caliber, and the blackout curtains actually work — which, if you’ve stayed in enough city hotels, you know isn’t always a given.
Dining and Amenities
The South Gate restaurant downstairs serves up solid American cuisine, though I’ll be honest — with New York’s incredible dining scene right outside your door, you might find yourself exploring more than staying in. The fitness center is well-equipped (important when you’re indulging in all that great food), and the business facilities are top-notch if you’re mixing work with pleasure. There’s also a spa that’s perfect for unwinding after a day of pounding the pavement.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Essex House — it strikes that rare balance between luxury and livability. Couples consistently rave about it, and I can see why. You get that classic New York hotel experience without the stuffiness, plus a location that makes everything feel effortless. Whether you’re catching a show, hitting the museums, or just people-watching in Central Park, you’re never more than a few minutes from your beautifully appointed home base. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay memorable, and the valet parking (a real luxury in this part of Manhattan) means you can even bring a car if that’s your thing. It’s one of those places that reminds you why New York remains the greatest city in the world.

Location is great with good staff
The location of the property is great … best place if u r visiting manhattan . It is nxt to Central Park n all the shopping is just a walk away …. Staff is also polite n helpful.
What could be improved: I don’t like the room service department as they are very lazy n if u ask only tea bags to be sent to ur room they take ages to sent up . I ordered tea tray which was not there in the room at 2:00 in the afternoon n instead of calling them again n again I finally had to go down at the reception at 7:00 in the evening to get tht . Also rooms are small for 3 adults.
Very Good
Good location
Great location and beautiful hotel near the park
Location and size of double room was great. Loved coffee in lobby. My check in woman was great.
What could be improved: Not sure about the resort charge, use or lose? The two women kept wanting me to delay my vouchers. Also $2,000 for less than 48 hours is steep.
Amazing location, comfortable and good breakfast offer!
The location was amazing. The rooms are small-ish (normal size for NYC), but very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was also very good. The staff were really helpful and kind. We would definitely stay again.
What could be improved: N/a
A great place to sleep when in town for an event.
Bed very comfortable
What could be improved: no criticism
Comfortable & sweet!
The room was spacious, and the staff are very nice with positive & polite attitudes. They are always happy to help you with any request you have.
Concierge service helped me with booking tickets for museums around NYC.
The hotel is safe with security around & in the lobby which was a ++ for me.
Highly recommend!!!
What could be improved: Wifi wasnt free (only for Bonvoy members).
Wonderful
Location is superb, right opposite Central park.
Good but no impressive like Mandarin in Boston
What could be improved: We had some small problems that should have been addressed better by the concierge considering the hotel category.
Wonderful
Room was spacious and accommodated our family of 4 perfectly. The proximity to central park was great.
Very clean, nice staff but not a relaxing stay because of the noise
Cleanliness
Friendly staff
What could be improved: Breakfast (not worth it at all. There is no choice)
Can hear all the noise from outside.
Wanted extra duvet but they said not available only this itchy very thin blanket
