Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott New York Manhattan/Fifth Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place in Midtown. But you know what? This little gem on 37th Street completely changed my mind about what you can get for your money in New York.
The location is actually pretty brilliant if you think about it. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Empire State Building (I mean, you can see it from some of the upper floors), and Herald Square is right there when you need to grab something from Macy’s or catch the subway. What I really loved though was how quiet 37th Street feels compared to the chaos on Broadway – you get that proper New York energy without the constant honking keeping you up at night. The front desk staff seemed genuinely happy to help, which honestly surprised me because, well, this is Manhattan and everyone’s usually rushing somewhere.
The rooms are what I’d call smart small – they’ve really thought about how to use every inch without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a closet. The beds are actually comfortable (that Marriott standard, you know), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without tripping over your suitcase every time you move around. I particularly appreciated the work desk area since I had some emails to catch up on, and the WiFi was solid throughout my stay. The bathrooms are compact but well-designed, with decent water pressure in the shower – something that can be hit or miss in older NYC buildings. One thing that caught me off guard was how modern everything felt; they’ve clearly put some money into keeping this place updated, which you don’t always see with the more budget-friendly Marriott properties. The only minor gripe I had was that the elevators can get pretty busy during peak check-in times, but that’s sort of par for the course in any Manhattan hotel. What really sold me on this place was stepping outside in the morning and realizing I could walk to Times Square in eight minutes, catch a train to anywhere in the city from Penn Station in five, or grab an amazing bagel from this little spot on 36th Street that the concierge recommended. It’s one of those stays where you feel like you’re actually staying in New York, not just visiting it.
