First Impressions
Walking onto Governors Island to reach Collective Governors Island feels like stepping into a different world entirely — and honestly, that’s exactly what makes this place so special. This five-star retreat sits on what used to be a military base, and you can still feel that history in the air as you make your way to the hotel. The ferry ride from Manhattan takes just eight minutes, but it might as well transport you to another era. I mean, where else can you stay at a luxury property that’s technically in New York but feels like you’ve escaped to a private island?
The Island Experience
What struck me most about staying here is how the entire island becomes your backyard. You’re not just booking a room — you’re getting access to 172 acres of car-free exploration. The old military buildings have been transformed into art installations and event spaces, and there’s something almost surreal about wandering past historic fortifications in the morning before heading back to your luxury accommodation. The island closes to day visitors in the evening, which means you’ll have those sunset views over the harbor pretty much to yourself.
Accommodations and Amenities
The accommodations themselves blend modern luxury with the island’s unique character beautifully. Each space feels thoughtfully designed — not cookie-cutter fancy, but actually comfortable in a way that makes you want to linger. The views are honestly incredible; you’re looking out at the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline from angles most New Yorkers never see. The restaurant focuses on locally-sourced ingredients, and eating dinner while watching the city lights flicker on across the water is pretty magical. There’s also a spa that takes full advantage of the peaceful setting — it’s the kind of place where you actually forget you’re still technically in one of the world’s busiest cities.
Location and Getting Around
Now, the location thing is interesting — couples absolutely love it here (they rate it 9.4, which makes sense), but you need to plan accordingly. The ferry runs on a schedule, so spontaneous trips back to Manhattan aren’t really an option. That said, this forced slowdown is part of the appeal. You’re close enough to see the city, far enough away to truly disconnect. Parking isn’t an issue since cars aren’t allowed on the island anyway — everyone arrives by ferry, which adds to that sense of leaving the regular world behind.
Why Guests Love It
What guests consistently rave about is how this place manages to feel both exclusive and accessible. You’re staying somewhere genuinely unique — I can’t think of another luxury hotel experience quite like this in the New York area. The combination of top-tier amenities with the island’s peaceful, almost otherworldly atmosphere creates something special. It’s perfect for couples looking for a romantic escape without actually leaving the city, or honestly, anyone who wants to experience New York from a completely different perspective. Just remember to pack everything you need for your stay, because that corner bodega run isn’t happening here.

Guest Reviews
I loved mostly everything about our stay. The location was great, my surroundings were peaceful quiet and relaxing. It was so pleasantly strange to be so close to the city and have that much peace! The facilities were kept very clean so we were extremely satisfied with that. Initially, we were worried about how the outdoor bathrooms might be...they were great. The Byredo soaps...like a spa experience. I even looked them up online to purchase for my own home. I loved the comfort of our journey tent and the bed was incredible! We had everything we needed right in our little tent and it was so great to experience the sounds of nature (crickets and the water) and having the luxury of being "indoors" while still feeling like you were outside. I slept like a baby.
I love location and people who are working there. Atmosphere was 10/10
Loved it, a perfect (and quick) escape from the city! My husband and I stayed for a night for my birthday, and it was everything I wanted - a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city with a beautiful view, an incredible sunset, and amazing food and drinks! The staff was super friendly, and getting around the island was easy. I only wished we arrived earlier in the day to be able to explore a little more of what the island and the hotel property had to offer.
Great views and AC in the tent, boxes breakfast and coffee in the AM
lawn games, fire pits and smores, free welcome drink, live music, glamping options, and beautiful city views
Everything was beautiful and clean. We really enjoyed our stay. I know there are mixed reviews on the restaurant, but we really enjoyed it. It’s definitely a fancier type of place, with smaller portions, but everything we had was delicious. After dinner, we saw someone order a cheeseboard that looks beautiful and delicious, so we ordered one to go. It arrived in the same beautiful presentation, not to go boxes and we so enjoyed that because it added to our romantic getaway.
They should do a limited buffet bar in the am I think it would be profitable and good for guess, a chance to mingle with others - may be less waste.
Collective Governors Island gives you the seclusion one desires why giving you an amazing skyline view of the city. Roasting marshmallows by the fire pit overlooking the city night light definitely one of the evening’s highlights.
This is a beautiful outdoor glamping retreat overlooking NY Harbor, The Statue of Liberty and The NYC skyline. We went in late October and it was so cozy, comfy and relaxing. You can relax at the retreat or walk around Governors Island, take in the sights and engage in the various activities. The bar is open all day but the restaurant is only open for breakfast, lunch and dinner . There are coolers or refrigerators in your lodgings...so pack your own snacks and beverages. Sit on your deck, enjoy a glass of wine and watch the sunset over the harbor...unforgettable!
Super cool experience! My daughter and I had a blast! Loved the s’mores, the heated beds, the view and the food
