I was expecting just another midtown crash pad, but this place actually has character – and I mean real personality, not the fake boutique hotel stuff. Walking into the lobby on West 43rd, there’s this old Hollywood glamour thing happening that somehow doesn’t feel forced or cheesy. The whole Casablanca movie theme could’ve been a disaster, but they pulled it off with just enough restraint.

The location is honestly perfect if you’re doing the whole New York tourist thing – Times Square is literally around the corner, but here’s the thing most people don’t realize: being on 43rd between Broadway and Sixth puts you close enough to everything without being in the absolute chaos. I’ve stayed in hotels right on the square before and couldn’t sleep because of the noise and crowds, but this spot gives you that buffer zone you didn’t know you needed. You can walk to pretty much any theater in about three minutes, hit up Bryant Park when you need to decompress, and there’s a decent bodega right down the block (trust me on this – hotel snacks are robbery).

What really won me over was the attention to detail that actually matters. The rooms aren’t huge – I mean, it’s midtown Manhattan, what do you expect – but they’re thoughtfully designed. Good blackout curtains (crucial when you’re trying to sleep off jet lag), solid WiFi that doesn’t crap out when you’re trying to video call home, and the beds are legitimately comfortable. The bathrooms are small but functional, with decent water pressure and those little toiletries that don’t smell like industrial cleaner. I stayed in one of their four-star rooms on the seventh floor and barely heard street noise, which honestly surprised me given the location. The staff seems to actually know the neighborhood too – when I asked about breakfast spots that weren’t tourist traps, the front desk guy gave me three solid recommendations within two blocks.

Here’s something I appreciated: they don’t try to oversell you on amenities you’ll never use. No massive spa or fancy restaurant that’ll cost you a week’s salary. Instead, they focus on getting the basics really right – clean rooms, helpful service, and that whole literary theme woven throughout without beating you over the head with it. There are books everywhere, obviously, but it feels natural rather than gimmicky. The fitness room is tiny but has the essentials, and there’s a business center if you need to print boarding passes or whatever. Honestly, for the price point and location, it’s one of those places where you feel like you got a fair deal rather than getting taken advantage of – which, let’s be real, is pretty rare in this part of the city.
