The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection
You know what surprised me most about The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection?
You know what surprised me most about The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection? Walking into the lobby, I actually forgot I was in the middle of the chaos that is midtown Manhattan. This four-star gem sits right on 44th Street – and I mean right in the thick of things, just a block from Times Square – but somehow they’ve managed to create this literary sanctuary that feels like stepping back into old New York. The whole place has this incredible history with the Round Table writers (you know, Dorothy Parker and that crowd), and honestly, you can still feel that creative energy in the wood-paneled walls and vintage furnishings.
The rooms are smaller than what you’d find in a suburban hotel, but that’s Manhattan for you – and frankly, they’ve made excellent use of the space. I loved the classic touches like the rich fabrics and traditional furniture, though I’ll admit the bathroom was pretty compact. What really won me over was how quiet it actually gets at night, which is almost miraculous considering you’re literally surrounded by Broadway theaters and tourist madness. The staff genuinely knows their stuff too – they gave me restaurant recommendations that weren’t the obvious tourist traps, and when I needed to store luggage after checkout, they handled it without any fuss. The Blue Bar downstairs is where you want to grab a drink, especially if you can snag one of those cozy corner spots. It gets pretty packed around show times (all those theaters are within a few blocks), but during afternoon hours it’s perfect for just soaking in the atmosphere.
Here’s the thing – if you’re looking for a massive fitness center or a rooftop pool, this isn’t your place. But if you want to stay somewhere with actual character in the heart of everything, where you can walk to literally any Broadway show and still feel like you’re in a real New York institution rather than some generic chain, then this is exactly what you’re after. I mean, the location alone is worth it – Bryant Park is a quick stroll, Grand Central is walkable, and you’ve got subway access right there. The rates aren’t cheap (nothing in this area is), but for a hotel with this much personality and an 8.5 rating that actually feels earned, I’d definitely stay here again. Just book early if you’re planning to visit during busy theater season – this place fills up fast, and once you’ve experienced that old-school New York hospitality, you’ll understand why.

Elegance and comfort in an historic mid-town hotel!
Wonderful, renovated rooms in an historic midtown hotel! Fabulous bar food and service (great truffle fries and martinis). Breakfast was amazing - best French toast imaginable. Managed to feel both upscale and down home friendly at the same time.
What could be improved: Nothing.
A truly wonderful experience
The Algonquin is a luxury boutique hotel. It has a wonderful old world charm. Excellent in every way
What could be improved: There was nothing that I didn’t like
Exceptional
Theater District hotel with a rich history. Genuinely friendly staff, including Hamlet the resident cat.
Great stay in a hotel with real character in the very heart of NYC
Location close to Times Square and history and authenticity, and the Dorothy Parker quotes on room doors
What could be improved: Bar and lounge areas actually small and limited, and no restaurant although meals were available
Excellence in every way with every stay.
Thanks again to the Algonquin and staff. Also, both gentlemen attending our transportation to and from the hotel did us right too. Our taxis were waiting on us as we stepped out every time. We also had dinner the night we arrived. The missus had the truffle fries and house salad. I had the burger and fries. They were both excellent. Cooked right, served right and attended to dutifully with a smile. To Marriott's credit they did do a classy job of moving the Blue Bar inside the lobby/dining room. Keeping the round table and giving it a hallowed spot in a cove is pretty sweet too. We'll be back, again.
What could be improved: Even though Marriott closed the Oak Room, the spirit of the Algonquin is stronger than any corporate makeover. Now, I'm just an old ad guy musing about how a little promotion around the Gonk's place in history could lead to something other than having to make more space for PowerPoint presentations. But I digress...
Beautiful Hotel with lots of charm.
The hotel is beautiful and our room was adorable 😍.
The location is perfect! So close to everything! The lobby is inviting!
What could be improved: I can't think of anything.
A comfortable oasis amidst the hubbub.
Location, cleanliness, small size, easy check in/out.
Loved the historic property, Hamlet the cat, and will definitely return!
The meals and cocktails and staff were great; true to New York in general, food/beverages were very expensive. The historic nature of the hotel is wonderful, and the menus contain many interesting footnotes about the property!
What could be improved: Front desk wanted to charge $1 each for a postcard stamp--this is ridiculous at this level of hotel.
Wonderful
For us, the location was perfect -- safe, near many good restaurants and other places we wanted to visit. We love the history of the Algonquin, and even though the hotel has been renovated, they have tried to maintain its importance in New York's literary history.
What could be improved: Of course, being in NYC, the room was smaller than I would have liked.
Very Good
Rooms were small. Not much that can be done, I’m sure. Loved the $45/day credit although didn’t really get to use it and it pales in comparison to cost of a Merlot glass of wine ($24 per glass).
