You know what really struck me about the Hyatt Place New York/Midtown-South? It’s tucked away on 36th Street in this spot that feels like you’ve found something the tourists haven’t quite discovered yet – though honestly, you’re still right in the thick of everything that matters in New York. I mean, you’re literally a few blocks from the Empire State Building, but somehow the street itself doesn’t have that overwhelming crush of people taking selfies every two feet.
The whole four-star setup here actually lives up to what you’d expect, which – let’s be real – doesn’t always happen in Manhattan. The lobby has this modern, clean vibe that doesn’t try too hard to be fancy, and the staff genuinely seemed to know what they were doing when I checked in around 3 PM on a Thursday (no waiting around while they figured out their computer system, thank god). What I really appreciated was how quiet my room was considering you’re in Midtown – I think it’s because 36th Street doesn’t get the same constant traffic as the bigger avenues. The rooms themselves are smart about space, which matters when you’re paying New York prices. They’ve got this cool setup where the bathroom counter extends into the main room, giving you actual space to spread out your stuff instead of cramming everything onto a tiny nightstand.
Here’s the thing though – and this is something you only figure out after staying in a bunch of NYC hotels – the location is actually pretty perfect for getting around. You’ve got Herald Square and all that shopping chaos just a few blocks south, Penn Station is close enough to be convenient but far enough that you don’t hear the subway rumbling under you all night. I walked to Koreatown for dinner one night (maybe 10 minutes tops), and getting to Times Square was easy when my friend insisted we do the whole tourist thing. The 6 train at 33rd Street becomes your best friend, and there’s something satisfying about knowing you can walk to Madison Square Garden if you want, or head up to Bryant Park when you need a break from all the concrete. I noticed they’ve got a pretty decent breakfast setup in the morning – not just the sad continental stuff some places try to pass off, but actual food that doesn’t make you immediately hunt for the nearest deli. The coffee was strong enough to handle a New York morning, which is honestly all I really needed.

Fabulous hotel
Very central, good breakfast included which is a great start and saves you a lot of dollars.
What could be improved: As an Irish person very hard to get tea after hours. No milk anywhere.

Great location
Clean, well-maintained hotel and rooms, with a good breakfast and facilities - good value for money.
The location was very convenient, and the staff was always receptive and helpful. For example, my devices were not connecting to the Wi-Fi, but the staff helped me easily resolve it. The breakfast was good. My room was clean and well maintained. The rooftop terrace with a view of the Empire State building was awesome!
What could be improved: My room didn't have a great view (just of other buildings), but there was a large window that let in light. The elevators were a bit slow at times due to the crowd, but I never had to wait more than 5 minutes.
It’s worth the expence
It’s worth the price.
What could be improved: It’s not a dislike but maybe breakfast might be a little bit better, as well as the wi-fi. That’s why I give 9/10.
Centrally located, clean hotel with good breakfast
Hotel was centrally located and had big enough room for the family. Breakfast was good with wide selection. We had the room with the Empire State Building view and really enjoyed it. Rooftop terrace at the 26th floor offered amazing view over the city and towards Empire State Building.
What could be improved: Lifts were highly occupied during the peak hours, but as we mainly avoided rush hours it wasn't a problem for us.
