HGU New York
Look, I've walked past HGU New York dozens of times on East 32nd Street without really noticing it – which is actually kind of perfect for a hotel, if you think about it.
Look, I’ve walked past HGU New York dozens of times on East 32nd Street without really noticing it – which is actually kind of perfect for a hotel, if you think about it. It’s tucked right there in the thick of Midtown South, and honestly, the location grows on you once you realize what you’re working with. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the Empire State Building (though let’s be real, you’ll probably get tired of dodging tourists pretty quickly), and Herald Square is right there when you need to grab something from Macy’s or catch the subway. The four-star setup here feels just right – not trying too hard to be flashy, but definitely putting thought into the details.
What I really appreciate about this place is how it handles the whole boutique hotel thing without being obnoxious about it. The rooms have this clean, modern vibe that doesn’t scream “look at me,” and the beds are genuinely comfortable – I mean, after walking around New York all day, that matters more than you’d think. The bathrooms are compact but well-designed, which is honestly about as good as it gets in Manhattan unless you’re dropping serious cash. You know what surprised me? How quiet it actually gets at night, considering you’re smack in the middle of everything. I was expecting way more street noise, but they’ve clearly put some thought into the windows and soundproofing.
The staff here gets it – they’re helpful without hovering, and they actually know the neighborhood well enough to give you decent restaurant recommendations that aren’t just the obvious tourist spots. There’s a fitness center that’s small but has what you need, and the lobby area works well for meeting people or just hanging out with a coffee. Parking is going to cost you (this is Manhattan, after all), but there are garages nearby, and honestly, you probably don’t want to drive here anyway. The whole Penn Station area can feel a bit hectic during rush hour, but that also means you’ve got incredible transit access – you can be in Brooklyn or up in Harlem faster than most hotels will get you there. For what you’re paying and where you are, it’s a solid choice that won’t leave you with any real complaints, just maybe wishing New York hotel rooms were bigger in general.
To book a hotel in New York during major events like Fashion Week, travelers need early planning as this vibrant city draws visitors eager to experience its dynamic energy and world-famous skyline.
Guest Reviews
Great location budget option hotel, roof terrace included just rooms little small
Great location near empire state, subway within 50yards, coffee shop on ground floor. And a little sun trap roof terrace.
Wonderful
Location was amazing, staff were lovely and a very nice place to stay
What could be improved: For the price I did think I had a slightly bigger room
A comfortable stay with my teenager, great bed, bathroom and location.
Super comfortable, big bed with lots of comfy pillows. Nice decor. Newly renovated bathroom with great shower pressure. Coffee shop and pastries attached to the hotel was excellent. Close to Times Square, Empire State Building and short walk to Central Park (20 min).
What could be improved: As per previous reviews, there is a very unusual, damp, musty smell when walking through the double door entrance of the hotel. It is an awful smell... observed damp beneath the carpet which is likely the cause. The hotel is run by the big chain Hilton - it's a massive surprise that Hilton hasn't sorted this quickly. Terrible wifi in the rooms, non- existent on the 7th floor.
Ill come back
Great staff
What could be improved: Breakfast should be included
Good
Great location, clean facilities and lovely boutique hotel.
What could be improved: Hotel was undergoing renovations and we were not notified the restaurant / bar was closed. Staff at reception weren’t that friendly or welcoming.
Very Good
Coffee shop,loby,gym,roof deck,cleanliness
What could be improved: Roofdeck closes early. There is no bar. AC wasn't working well.
A fresh and super comfortable bed in an excellent part of town for tourist sights
Its amazing location, its super comfortable beds, its clean and attractive bathroom, its functionality for my needs
What could be improved: I would have liked free coffee or tea in the room for first thing when I wake up as I had to buy it every day in the coffee shop
Wonderful
The room was amazing, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The location was very practical and the avenue was very quiet which made my nights amazing.
Good
Great location. Lovely clean hotel.
What could be improved: The air conditioning was temperamental, and leaked slightly in my room.
2 cans of drinks exploded in the mini fridge.
Very Good
Excellent staff and location. Excellent noa cafe located within hotel. The ambience was amazing in the artwork beautiful again the staff was excellent in the location great very central in Manhattan.
What could be improved: we had a major issue with the air-conditioning condensation leaking and it was not fixed properly when we asked therefore dripping all night keeping us up that is the only negative thing we have to say.
