Hampton Inn Manhattan Grand Central
I'll be honest – when I first walked into the Hampton Inn Manhattan Grand Central, I wasn't expecting much from a three-star place smack in the middle of Midtown East.
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into the Hampton Inn Manhattan Grand Central, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place smack in the middle of Midtown East. But you know what? This place actually gets it right in ways that matter when you’re dealing with the chaos of New York.
The location is pretty much perfect if you’re here for business or just want to be in the thick of things without paying those crazy Times Square hotel prices. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Grand Central – and I mean actually three minutes, not that inflated hotel marketing three minutes that’s really ten. The Chrysler Building is right there looming over you, which never gets old, honestly. What I really appreciate is that you can duck into Grand Central’s food court when you don’t feel like navigating restaurant reservations, or catch the shuttle to Times Square if you must do the tourist thing. The street itself (43rd) can get a bit hectic during rush hour with all the commuter foot traffic, but it quiets down nicely in the evenings.
The rooms are clean and functional – nothing fancy, but the beds are actually comfortable and the AC works properly, which is more than I can say for some pricier Manhattan spots I’ve stayed at. The breakfast situation is solid too, though it gets pretty crowded between 7:30 and 8:30 when all the business travelers are trying to grab coffee and run. I learned to either go early or wait until after 9. One thing that surprised me was how quiet the rooms are considering you’re right in Midtown – they’ve got decent soundproofing, so you’re not listening to sirens all night. The staff seems to actually know the neighborhood too, which is refreshing. When I asked about getting to the Flatiron District, the front desk guy gave me specific subway directions instead of just shrugging and suggesting a cab. Oh, and there’s a little market across the street that’s open late, which came in handy more than once when I needed snacks or forgot to pack something. The whole area has that classic New York energy without feeling touristy or fake – you’ve got actual New Yorkers rushing to work, good delis on every corner, and you can walk to Bryant Park or the UN building if you want to stretch your legs.
