Gild Hall, A Thompson Hotel, by Hyatt

I'll be honest – when I first walked into Gild Hall, A Thompson Hotel, by Hyatt, I wasn't expecting much from the narrow entrance on Gold Street.

I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Gild Hall, A Thompson Hotel, by Hyatt, I wasn’t expecting much from the narrow entrance on Gold Street. But step inside and wow, you’re immediately hit with this dramatic Gothic Revival vibe that feels more like a gentleman’s club from the 1920s than your typical hotel lobby. The dark wood paneling and library-style atmosphere actually make sense when you realize this four-star boutique property sits in the heart of the Financial District, surrounded by buildings that have seen centuries of New York business deals.

What really struck me about this place is how they’ve managed to create this cozy, almost intimate feeling despite being right in the thick of everything downtown. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Stone Street – you know, that cobblestone strip where all the Wall Street folks grab drinks after work – and the South Street Seaport is right there if you want to escape the urban canyon feel for a bit. The rooms themselves lean into that whole sophisticated library theme, with rich fabrics and dark wood that somehow doesn’t feel heavy or oppressive. Actually, I found the lighting surprisingly warm for such a moody design scheme. The beds are fantastic too – I mean, you’d expect that from a Thompson property, but still worth mentioning.

Here’s what I really appreciated: the staff genuinely knows the neighborhood. When I asked about dinner recommendations, they didn’t just rattle off the obvious tourist spots near the waterfront. Instead, they pointed me toward this little gem on Nassau Street and actually gave me the heads up about which subway entrance to use to avoid construction. Parking is… well, it’s downtown Manhattan, so expensive and complicated, but the valet team handles it without making you feel guilty about driving in the city. One small thing – if you’re a light sleeper, request a room facing away from the street side. Gold Street isn’t exactly Times Square, but there’s still that constant low hum of city life, especially during morning rush hour. The neighborhood completely transforms after business hours though, becoming almost eerily quiet, which is kind of amazing considering you’re still in one of the busiest cities in the world. If you’re someone who loves that classic New York hotel experience but wants to skip the Midtown chaos, this place hits that sweet spot perfectly.

Very Good

Location and comfort were 10/10

What could be improved: Unfortunately our two rooms were not both upgrades as had been expected (as per booking.com) and not on the same floor which was a bit inconvenient. We stayed 5 nights...so I thought this would be sorted when I highlighted the inconvenience

I loved the books in the lobby, the restaurant, the clean, quiet, and very nice room ~ and the *great* staff in the hotel, restaurant, and bar.

Wonderful

The location was very good, in the financial district. The room was very coze, nicely decorated and everything was in good conditions. Cute toilet.

What could be improved: The courtains couldn't close completly which was a bit annoying because there were meeting rooms in the front building. Other than that, everything was good.

Awesome stay, fantastic staff, highly recommended.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Gild Hall, and look forward to our next visit. Every one of the staff was magnificent, we had many interactions, whether help with the free fancy coffee machine, finding and mailing an important letter that I had left in the room. Incredible professionalism, natural humor and genuine welcome - the list goes on and this is our new 'go to' when in NY. Appreciated the lower floor fabulous rooms with tall ceilings and comfy lounge chair.

Great place to stay for low key luxury.

The property has the best staff. The size of the rooms is amazing.

What could be improved: The location is great as it’s off the beaten path but it can also be a challenge because of that. The restaurant staff could improve.
