Fitzpatrick Grand Central

I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Fitzpatrick Grand Central, I wasn’t expecting much from another Midtown hotel. But you know what? This Irish-owned gem actually surprised me in the best way possible. The lobby has this warm, old-world charm that feels more like a proper European hotel than your typical Manhattan business spot, and the staff genuinely seemed happy to see me (which, let’s face it, isn’t always a given in New York).

What really won me over was the location – I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from Grand Central, which sounds touristy but is actually incredibly practical. I could grab the 4/5/6 trains without dealing with the chaos inside the terminal itself, and there’s this great little shortcut through the Chrysler Building’s lobby that locals use. The four-star property sits right in the thick of things on 44th Street, but the rooms are surprisingly quiet – something about the way the building sits back from the street noise. I stayed on the eighth floor and barely heard the typical Midtown madness below.

The rooms themselves have this cozy, almost residential feel with dark wood furniture and Irish touches that don’t feel gimmicky. My bathroom was small (this is Manhattan, after all), but well-designed, and honestly, the bed was fantastic – I slept better than I expected to in the middle of all that urban energy. The hotel restaurant, Wheeltapper, serves proper Irish pub food, and while it’s not groundbreaking, their fish and chips hit the spot after a long day walking around the city. Plus, the bartender actually knows how to pour a proper Guinness, which you’d think would be standard but… well, it’s not. One tiny thing that bugged me – the elevators are a bit slow during busy times, but I started taking the stairs and actually enjoyed the bit of exercise. If you’re looking for something with more personality than the big chain hotels but without the boutique hotel attitude, this place gets it right.
