You know what struck me first about the Courtyard by Marriott New York Manhattan/ Fifth Avenue? It’s actually tucked right into the heart of Midtown without feeling like you’re drowning in tourist chaos. I mean, you’re literally steps from the main branch of the New York Public Library – those iconic lion statues are basically your neighbors – but the entrance on East 40th gives you this sort of breathing room that’s honestly hard to find in this part of Manhattan.
The lobby hits that sweet spot between corporate efficiency and actual warmth, which isn’t always easy for a four-star chain hotel to pull off. I’ve stayed here twice now, and both times the staff remembered little things – like how I needed extra towels sent up, or that I preferred a room away from the street noise. Speaking of noise, the rooms facing 40th Street can get a bit lively during morning rush hour, but honestly, if you’re staying in New York and expecting complete silence, you’re missing the point anyway. The double-pane windows do their job well enough.
What really works about this place is how it handles the practical stuff that can make or break a trip. The fitness center is small but gets the job done – I actually prefer it to those overwhelming hotel gyms that feel like they’re trying too hard. And the business center? It’s tucked away in a quiet corner where you can actually get work done, which matters if you’re here mixing business with pleasure. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from Marriott – clean, reliable, with those crisp white linens and a bathroom that feels bigger than it probably is thanks to clever mirror placement. I particularly appreciated the work desk setup; the lighting is actually decent for laptop work, and there are enough outlets that you won’t be crawling around on the floor trying to charge your phone.
Location-wise, you’re in this perfect sweet spot where you can walk to Bryant Park in about three minutes, catch a Broadway show without breaking a sweat, or hop on the subway at Grand Central – which is honestly one of my favorite stations anyway. The whole area comes alive differently depending on when you visit. Weekday mornings, you’re surrounded by the energy of people heading to work in those gleaming office towers. Evenings and weekends, it shifts into more of a cultural hub with all the theater and dining options. There’s this little coffee cart right outside that does surprisingly good bagels if you’re not in the mood for the hotel’s breakfast setup, which is fine but nothing to write home about. Overall, it’s the kind of place that just works – no dramatic wow moments, but no unpleasant surprises either, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re navigating everything else that comes with a New York trip.

Guest Reviews
Perfect location for getting around.
Location. Staff found my reservation even though Booking got my name wrong; they said Booking does that often.
What could be improved: Reading light was inadequate. Not enough shelf/ counter space in bathroom.
Excellent, will be returning!
Location is great 5-10min walk to Times Square 5 min walk to the Empire State Building. Great location very central to everything. Windows opened a couple of cm was great to be able to let some fresh air in and also be able to know if I needed an extra jacket or not.
What could be improved: Took a while to adjust to the car horns. Can hear it in the room all night long and that’s coming from living on a main busy road in Australia city.
I felt safe and it was clean
room was clean. We only needed a place to sleep for 1 night and it was perfect. Not a big room, but that's how nyc is. Compared to other hotels we've stayed in while in nyc it was probably the nicest.
What could be improved: small, but not much to do about that
Staff was amazing. Especially all the support for cleaning up. They really took care of my family
Location was great. Close to subway and Bryant park and major attractions
What could be improved: Waiting in line for the elevator in the morning.
Though that will be anywhere in NYC
Great location for NY trip
Great location! Very close to Grand Central Station and Times Square. Near many of the tourist destinations in New York as well as a wide range of restaurants and bars.
What could be improved: There are no breakfast facilities at the hotel. There is a coffee shop next-door though.
Overall a wonderful stay and highly recommend this hotel.
We stayed for 5 nights, family trip. The location of the hotel is top, 5 minutes walk, if that much, from Grand Central Station, several food options in the surrounding area. Both elevators were working, check-in and check-out very diligent, room was cleaned daily and always very tidy. Hot beverages are complementary in the lobby mezzanine, which is very good. On the last day, also complementary, the hotel kept our luggage in the luggage room, proper room, staff only access and luggage tagged for safety. There is a computer and printer in the mezzanine but the printer was out of order, which was not an issue, the reception kindly printed our boarding passes. Very friendly and helpful staff. We found the value good for money since there is no breakfast served at the hotel. I would come back to this hotel.
What could be improved: There could be a mini fridge in the room. No view from our room, which is understandable since not all rooms and floors can have a nice view. However, since we were on the 7th facing back, the noise from all the machines on the ground floor outside the hotel (believe to be AC machines) were very audible in the room. We slept fine, it was just a little hard to fall asleep at the beginning.
Wonderful
clean/great location/good price
Vert good location e good service
Service
What could be improved: Elevators
Nice place to stay with reasonable prices for NYC
Clean, well run, good location
What could be improved: One of only 2 elevators was out due to renovating. With over 25 floors, this should be disclosed on the hotel listing.
Very Good
What could be improved: The rooms need a small refrigerator. Not having water or cold drinks in the room is an inconvenience. Having to go to the 5th floor daily for ice is not ideal.
