Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to U Hotel Fifth Avenue, Empire State Building, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place right in the thick of Midtown madness. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in unassuming packages, and this little gem actually gets it right in ways that matter.
The location is pretty much unbeatable if you’re doing the classic New York tourist thing. I mean, you’re literally steps from the Empire State Building – like, close enough that you don’t need to squint to see King Kong climbing it. Walking down Fifth Avenue becomes your morning routine, which honestly never gets old, even when you’re dodging the usual crowd of street vendors and tour groups. What I really appreciated though was how easy it made getting around – Herald Square is right there, so you’ve got multiple subway lines within a couple blocks, and Penn Station is close enough for day trips or airport runs without the drama of crosstown traffic.
The rooms themselves are… well, they’re New York hotel rooms, so don’t expect sprawling suites or anything. But they’re clean, the beds are actually comfortable (which isn’t always a given in this price range), and the air conditioning works properly – crucial during those sticky summer months when the city feels like a concrete oven. The staff surprised me too; check-in was quick, and when I had a question about restaurant recommendations, the front desk guy gave me actual local spots instead of the usual tourist traps. Small thing, but it matters when you’re trying to eat like a human being instead of surviving on overpriced hotel room service. The neighborhood gets busy during the day – I mean, really busy – but it quiets down surprisingly well at night, at least on the side streets. You’ll still hear the occasional siren or late-night delivery truck, but that’s just New York being New York. What really sold me on this place was the value proposition. You’re getting a solid, no-nonsense base of operations right in the heart of everything, without paying those insane luxury hotel prices that make your credit card weep. Perfect for people who plan to spend most of their time out exploring the city anyway, but want somewhere decent to crash that doesn’t require a subway ride to get to the good stuff.

The staff! Always up for a chat and they go out of their way to help with any requests. Room was clean and a decent size for ny. Location perfect, close to citibikes, subway, shops, etc.
What could be improved: I was on the street side and the curtains did not fully block out the light, but slept fine with with some ear plugs and a sleeping mask.
