First Impressions

Walking up to The Empire Hotel New York on West 63rd Street, you immediately get that classic Upper West Side vibe — it’s not trying too hard, but there’s definitely something special happening here. This four-star property sits right in the heart of one of Manhattan’s most beloved neighborhoods, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. The building has this timeless New York elegance that feels both sophisticated and approachable, which pretty much sums up the entire Upper West Side experience.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about staying in this part of New York — you’re literally steps from Lincoln Center, which means world-class performances are practically on your doorstep. Central Park is right there too, and I mean actually right there, not a “short walk” that turns into fifteen blocks. The couples who stay here seem to get it — they’ve rated the location 9.2 out of 10, and after spending time in the area, I totally understand why. You’ve got that perfect mix of cultural attractions, great dining, and residential charm that makes you feel like a temporary New Yorker rather than just another tourist.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in had that modern boutique hotel feel without being overly trendy — you know, the kind of place where everything works properly and looks good without screaming “look at me.” The windows offer nice city views, and there’s something satisfying about watching the neighborhood come to life in the morning. What really impressed me was how well-designed everything felt for the space — New York hotel rooms aren’t exactly known for being spacious, but they’ve made smart choices here that make the room feel comfortable rather than cramped.

Dining & Amenities

The hotel’s restaurant scene is actually pretty solid — there’s a rooftop spot that locals seem to know about, which is always a good sign. I ended up grabbing drinks there one evening and was surprised by how many people were clearly from the neighborhood rather than just hotel guests. The fact that they offer private parking in this part of Manhattan is honestly a bit of a miracle — if you’re driving into the city, this detail alone might make your decision for you. Most places around here either don’t have parking at all or charge astronomical rates for valet service.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back to The Empire Hotel New York is that sweet spot it hits between accessibility and sophistication. You’re not paying Plaza prices, but you’re getting a genuinely great location with solid service and comfortable accommodations. The Upper West Side location means you can walk to amazing bagel shops, browse the farmers market at Lincoln Center, or catch a show without dealing with the chaos of Times Square. It’s the kind of place that makes sense for both first-time visitors who want to experience “real” New York and repeat travelers who’ve figured out that location trumps flashy amenities every time.

Its location was excellent for me, next to the Lincoln Center, a great Italian restaurant over the road, and very near Central Park

I liked the lobby and reception staff were v helpful.

What could be improved: Room very dark because of the wallpaper as well as limited light with buildings (inevitably almost) very close but the lighting didn’t make up for this so hard to read at night.
Not well designed rooms eg little things like height of towel hook so high that hard for anyone 5’5 to reach, loo paper trapped behind door, v squeaky cold tap that quickly ran out of water
I was also quite cold.

Nice modern room, friendly, efficient staff, very clean and great location. Right near the 59th St station where a lot of lines meet and across from Lincoln center and near many restaurants, (I used to live in the nabe.) Also of course good taxi and uber service. Good WiFi

What could be improved: It needs to open its lobby coffee bar/lounge.

There is a pool but it's seasonal and it wasn't open. So I can't report on that.

Nothing beats this location at Lincoln Center! The staff are incredibly attentive and helpful. However, this hotel is struggling a bit during it’s ownership transition and renovations. It’s a bit run-down, a lot of peeling paint, ratty furniture, broken plumbing and windows that need to be upgraded to not only fit the frames (ours was taped in) but for sound insulation. The staff really did their best with what they had but it’s clear there are many things that need to be repaired and replaced. You are paying for the location (5 stars) and access to the fantastic rooftop bar. Hoping this midtown classic manages to find it’s groove again!

I loved the location, the comfort, the staff. The water bottles at the front desk are a nice touch. The location is wonderful for families and we enjoyed our stay.

What could be improved: The doorknob on our closet broke but they fixed it right away. I liked everything!

The location is excellent for getting downtown on the subway. Walking distance to Central Park, Dakota Building (John Lennon), Times Square and Broadway. Complimentary bottles of water at reception whenever you needed. Really friendly and helpful staff. Shame the pool and outside seating ( Roof top) under the Empire sign was closed but we did visit in March, so expected the pool to be closed. Target close by for any essentials you may need and cafes. Loved our stay here. Every day we got fresh towels and toiletries and our room cleaned if we wanted it.

What could be improved: The bathrooms are a little tired and could do with modernising, but not terrible by any means. However, I did see a sign on the Mezzanine floor about renovations. So perhaps the rooms are getting a make over at some point.
The bar upstairs is expensive but it’s Manhattan.

Location is ideal.

What could be improved: The rooms are tired. The bellman used to be friendlier, helpful with bags, holding doors open as you enter. This trip we were not treated with any of these qualities.
Hotel staff at front desk weren't to the level of previous stays as I've stayed here for years and years. I did not feel appreciated as a return guest. I had requested an early check in by an hour and it wasn't handled. I was made to feel like my request was ludicrous.
