I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to The Chelsean New York on West 25th Street, I wasn’t expecting much from this three-star spot. But you know what? Sometimes those modest expectations lead to the best surprises. The building itself has this understated brick facade that blends right into the Chelsea streetscape, and there’s something refreshing about a hotel that doesn’t try to scream luxury at you from the sidewalk.

The location is actually pretty genius if you think about it. You’re right in the heart of Chelsea, which means you can walk to the High Line in about five minutes (seriously, just head west toward the Hudson and you’re there), and the Flatiron Building is practically around the corner. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays despite being on a busy street – the rooms face away from the main traffic flow, so you’re not dealing with that constant hum of delivery trucks that plagues so many New York hotels. The front desk staff knows the neighborhood inside and out too, which came in handy when I needed to find a decent coffee shop that wasn’t Starbucks at 7 AM on a Sunday.

The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid mid-range place – clean, functional, with enough space that you’re not bumping into your suitcase every time you turn around. The beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms have been updated recently, though the water pressure can be a bit temperamental in the mornings when everyone’s getting ready. I mean, it’s New York – you learn to work around these things. What I found refreshing was the lack of pretense here. The Chelsean doesn’t try to be something it’s not, and there’s real value in that honesty. The WiFi works consistently, the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a freight train, and you can actually open the windows if you want some fresh air. Plus, being right by the subway means you can get pretty much anywhere in the city without dealing with the nightmare that is trying to hail a cab in Chelsea during rush hour.

Great location and good price!

It was at a great location and not too far from Penn Station. The people who worked there were friendly. The room was clean but felt a little damp.

What could be improved: Leaving the hotel on Sunday morning, we had to use the stairs because we waited for an elevator for over 20 minutes. Two elevators came during that time but both were filled.

Great Value, Great Central Location, Great Service.

Good location in manhattan for being right in the middle of everything with quick subway access. Hotel was smaller than most so it was easy to navigate and get service quickly.

What could be improved: There were some definite signs of wear and tear in each of our rooms. Such as loose door latches, loose wall mounted toilet paper holders, and some light fixtures that were non essential to the room just didn’t function (over the headboard on the bed). Any issues we did have we brought them up to the staff and they addressed them within 30 minutes with their on sight maintenance.

Very Good

Good location near Subway. Good options for coffee, steak, and deli items within walking distance.

Hotel had a night club, I was on floor 9 and could not hear them.

Room was small by normal standards but a good size for NYC and well designed.

What could be improved: Felt a little dark but other than that no complaints

Lovely time as always in NYC

Confortable room and beds

What could be improved: A bit far from the subway station
On fridays and saturdays many people, noise and music in front of the entrance hall due to a night club in the basement. (However no noise in rooms)
Members of staff were rather nice (room cleaner-buttler) but difficulties to exchange with the welcoming agent on our arrival since she fell asleep.

Great location! Love Manhattan summer vacations

The best part of this stay was the location, it's incredibly convenient with metro stations just a short walk away. The room was clean and having a fridge in the room and a microwave at the lobby was a really convenient bonus.

What could be improved: We found the room to be very small and not well-suited for a group of four. It was difficult to move around comfortably with our luggage. Additionally, the noise from the street on weekend nights was quite loud and disruptive, which made it hard to get a good night sleep, especially if you stay at the 2nd floor in the street side.

Very Good

The location.

What could be improved: It was dated, and the bar area was so so.
