First Impressions
Walking up to Sonder City Hall Park on John Street, you immediately get that “hidden gem” feeling — it’s tucked into the Financial District in a way that feels both central and surprisingly quiet. This three-star property doesn’t try to be flashy, and honestly, that’s part of its charm. The building has this understated elegance that fits perfectly with the historic neighborhood, and you can tell right away that someone put thought into making this feel like more than just another corporate hotel.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s the thing about staying in New York‘s Financial District — most people think it’s all business suits and empty weekends, but they’re missing out. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the Brooklyn Bridge (and I mean the good photo spots, not just the tourist-packed entrance), and Stone Street’s cobblestones and historic pubs are right around the corner. The subway connections are actually fantastic from here — you’ve got multiple lines within a few blocks, so getting uptown or to Brooklyn is surprisingly easy. Plus, there’s something kind of magical about having this part of Manhattan mostly to yourself in the evenings.
The Room Experience
The room setup is where Sonder really shows what they’re about — these aren’t traditional hotel rooms, they’re more like well-designed urban apartments. You get a proper kitchen (not just a mini-fridge and microwave situation), which means you can actually grab groceries from the Whole Foods nearby and make breakfast without spending $25 on hotel coffee. The design feels modern but warm, with big windows that let in great natural light during the day. I particularly appreciated the workspace setup — it’s clear they understand that people need to actually get things done, not just pose at a tiny desk.
What Makes It Special
What struck me most was how the property manages to feel both independent and professional. You get the personal touches and local character that chain hotels often miss, but with the reliability and cleanliness standards you actually want. The building itself has this great old New York character — thick walls, high ceilings, the kind of architectural details that remind you why people fall in love with this city. There’s no traditional front desk scene, which some people might find odd, but the check-in process is smooth and the staff is responsive when you need them.
Why Guests Love It
The location rating speaks for itself — couples especially seem to get it, and I can see why. You’re close enough to all the major attractions that you can walk to the 9/11 Memorial, catch a ferry to the Statue of Liberty, or stroll through South Street Seaport, but you’re also in a neighborhood that feels like real New York. The value proposition is solid too — you’re getting more space and amenities than most Manhattan hotels at this price point, plus that kitchen means you can save money on meals when you want to. It’s the kind of place that works whether you’re here for business, a romantic weekend, or just want to experience a different side of the city that most tourists never see.

Guest Reviews
A great stay with you! Regular guest in New York, staying with you for the first time as my previous hotel had disappointed me. You surprised me all the more. A great concept, a more than spacious room compared to New York standards, with everything you need. No view, but quiet and no street noise - you have a great view in New York when you go out and experience the city. On the 7th floor there is not only the laundry but also all the utensils you need in the room for self-catering: dishwashing sponges, dishwasher tabs, toilet paper, kitchen roll, tea, coffee, etc. Wow! The kitchen in the room is more than fully equipped, you can even find salt and pepper, washing-up liquid and dish towels. Via the app you have a digital key and access to the hotel and room and also per app 7/24 chat support with which you can, for example, request fresh towels at any time or, if you wish, room cleaning for a fee or get support on anything else. I will definitely be back and look forward to it. See you next year! P.s.: for all those who are a bit lost like I was in front of the possibly full luggage lockers (7th floor) on the day of departure - you can also leave your luggage at the reception and go on a last farewell walk through the city that never sleeps for a few hours. Amazing stag, thanks again!
Location is great and close to many subway lines
Comfortable and still relatively in good shape
Fabulous rooftop with a magical view at night
My wife and I had the best time there, great location, walking distance from Wall Street and the NY underground. Super clean, great apartment, incredible spacious for New York. We will definitely come back.
Amazing place to stay! The location is superb, so close to anything you'll need when you stay in the Big Apple.
The room was very spacious, with all needed amenities. Also, the great pro was a room with washing machines and dryers on the 7th floor, a time and money saver when you stayed for a bit longer.
Kitchen, brewing machine, all of the equipment made our stay even better then we expected.
Staff is very cool and so friendly.
When I'll come to NYC again, I'll stick with Sonder, for sure!
The size, cleanliness, and comfort.
Good location and perfect rooms! Would repeat
Fantastic large room, modern and well laid out. Close to everything needed, including 2 grocery stores. Friendly staff.
Size, location, amenities
This is an excellent place to stay: short or long-term. Well-equipped, spacious, and with all amenities as presented. Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy NYC at its best!
The location is top! It is right next to the Fulton subway station that offers 7 or 8 lines to take you everywhere in town. The apartment is surrounded by loads of eateries, cafes, bars, and grocery shops. The one-bed room apartment was well-equipped for self-catering for our one week stay. The bed was very comfortable.
