Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the Hampton Inn Manhattan-35th St Empire State Bldg, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s tucked into this narrow slice of West 35th Street, and from the outside it sort of blends into the typical Midtown chaos. But you know what? That turned out to be exactly what I needed.
The thing about this three-star place is that it gets the fundamentals right without trying to be something it’s not. The lobby’s compact but clean, with that reliable Hampton Inn vibe – you know, nothing fancy but everything works. What really sold me though was stepping into the room and realizing how quiet it actually gets at night. I mean, you’re literally blocks from the Empire State Building (hence the name), Penn Station’s maybe a six-minute walk, and Herald Square is right there, but somehow the street noise doesn’t really penetrate. The rooms aren’t huge – this is New York after all – but they’re smartly designed with decent-sized bathrooms and, honestly, some of the most comfortable beds I’ve slept in during my Manhattan hotel adventures.
Here’s what I really appreciated: the staff actually knows the neighborhood. When I asked about grabbing coffee that wasn’t Starbucks, the front desk guy immediately pointed me toward this little spot on 36th that serves proper espresso. And when you’re dealing with the absolute madness that is getting around Midtown, having people who can give you real directions (not just “it’s nearby”) makes a difference. The location really is something special – you can walk to Madison Square Garden in literally five minutes, catch multiple subway lines without the usual tourist crowds, and you’re close enough to the Garment District that you feel like you’re seeing a slice of working New York, not just the theme park version. I actually ended up extending my stay an extra night because, well, finding a place in this area that doesn’t cost a fortune and doesn’t make you feel like you’re sleeping in a closet? That’s worth something. The free breakfast is standard Hampton fare – nothing revolutionary but it’ll get you going in the morning – and there’s a 24-hour fitness center that’s small but functional if you need to burn off all those New York pizza calories.

Wonderful
Best value for money. Comfortable bed. Very clean room. Nice to be able to cook your own waffle for breakfast. Extremely close to Penn Station.
What could be improved: The variety of food at breakfast needs improvement.
Overall good choice
The hotel is in a walkable distance from Times Square, Empire State, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and metro stations. The neighborhood also has great restaurants and everything you may need.
Room has decent space for New York standards and the staff was great. Breakfast was ok, but could have more variety and healthier options.
What could be improved: Elevators may take a while in the morning when people start moving, and the gym is not well-equipped for those who workout seriously - it only has a couple of dumbbells, a bench and treadmills.
Clean, centrally located, abundant breakfast.
Very convenient location (multiple train lines, Times Sq, Grand Central), spacious room, very clean. Abundant breakfast.
What could be improved: Cramped hallways. Breakfast served on disposable plates and cups: it creates a ton of trash and I hate eating plastic.
Good!
The hotel left a good impression: clean room, comfortable beds, well-functioning air conditioning. The breakfast was tasty and the location convenient.
What could be improved: Minor drawbacks: the elevator gets crowded in the morning, there were not always enough seats at breakfast, and a couple of times the milk ran out.
Wonderful
Great location with excellent staff
Good

What could be improved: View of the room to building in front.

What could be improved: I can’t think of anything that I didn’t mlike about the property.
Wonderful
Customer service.
Very Good
Location, staff, amenities
What could be improved: Breakfast was a total disappointment
Definitely not up to par as my other Hampton Inn stays
Wonderful
Great location, just 1 minute walking from subway station with many lines.
Free coffee/tea all day long, reasonal breakfast (relatively to American one - don't expect any vegetables).
The staff was kind and helpful. Baggage reservation until we got the room.
What could be improved: Only 2 elevators to serve 20 floors, sometimes you wait too much.
The a/c in the room was a bit noisy but nothing too significant
