First Impressions
Walking into the DoubleTree by Hilton New York Times Square South, you’re immediately struck by how they’ve managed to create a sense of calm in one of the city’s most electric neighborhoods. The lobby feels refreshingly spacious for Midtown — not cramped like so many hotels around here — and honestly, after navigating the controlled chaos of 8th Avenue, that breathing room hits different. You know what really sets the tone though? Those signature warm chocolate chip cookies at check-in. I mean, it’s a small touch, but when you’ve been dragging luggage through Penn Station, it actually matters.
Location & Neighborhood
This four-star hotel sits right in Hell’s Kitchen, which — despite the intimidating name — is actually one of Manhattan’s most vibrant neighborhoods now. You’re literally a few blocks from Times Square (close enough to walk, far enough to sleep), and Penn Station is right there when you need to catch a train or subway anywhere. What I love about this spot is that you get the full New York energy without being stuck in the tourist trap center of it all. The restaurant scene around here is incredible too — from hole-in-the-wall Thai places to upscale steakhouses, you’ve got options for days within a three-block radius.
The Rooms
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid Hilton property — clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed for the space constraints of Manhattan real estate. The beds are genuinely comfortable (which isn’t always a given in NYC hotels), and the bathrooms are compact but functional. What impressed me most was the soundproofing — considering you’re on 8th Avenue with all its traffic and general city noise, the rooms stay surprisingly quiet. The views vary depending on which floor and direction you get, but even the city-facing rooms give you that authentic New York backdrop of buildings and bustling street life below.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast buffet here is actually pretty solid for a hotel in this price range and location. It’s not going to blow your mind, but there’s enough variety to fuel up before a day of sightseeing — fresh fruit, decent coffee, and the usual suspects like eggs and pastries. Honestly though, with Hell’s Kitchen right outside your door, you might want to venture out and try some of the local breakfast spots. The hotel’s location means you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to dining options, from quick bagel runs to proper sit-down meals.
Why Guests Love It
What really makes this place work is how it balances accessibility with comfort — you’re in the thick of everything Manhattan has to offer, but you’re not sacrificing quality or peace of mind. Couples especially seem to appreciate this sweet spot (the location scores consistently high with them), and I can see why. You can walk to Broadway shows, hop on the subway to anywhere in the city, or just wander the neighborhood and stumble onto great food and interesting corners. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re experiencing real New York, not just the sanitized tourist version of it.
Our Rooms
Guest Reviews
we had a comfortable, nice time thanks to staff!
the staff was super kind and helpful!
What could be improved: the elevators took forever and the location wasn’t the best, but that’s not their fault!
Enjoyed the location
Great location
What could be improved: Very small rooms
Wonderful
Great locations, staff was great
The room was very clean when we arrived and also daily.
They were so kind to help us celebrate our engagement with treats and a wonderful decorated room.
Would definitely recommend.
What could be improved: Rooms is small but typical for this area
Wonderful
Staff were beyond friendly. A credit to the organisation. Especially Miss Williams with her outgoing personality and Friendly nature.
What could be improved: It's not so much of a property problem but one can be seen all over Midtown and one which the Hotel try to deal with, but the homelessness and the constant smell outside of Canabis is off putting compared to our previous NYC visits.
Wonderful
Very convenient and located close to the train station and subways.
What could be improved: Noisy overnight on the street and lots of homeless people.
Absolutely recommend, rooftop bar is 10/10, but ask for room on a low floor!
Fantastic location, clean rooms, rooftop bar is GORGEOUS and you can see the empire state building a stones throw away! Had exactly what we needed for our stay in the city, and would stay here again.
What could be improved: My biggest issue was the lack of luggage room, which we were not made aware of, you can leave luggage with the reception staff and it will be labelled and ticketed, but then your bags are left in the hallway and/or restaurant area that cannot be seen directly by staff at reception and basically could be taken by anyone. The elevator process was borderline painful pretty much every time during our stay, obviously this is out of the staff's control but something to bear in mind as it is unavoidable if you're on a higher floor like us (28) as it took up to 5-10 mins.
Very Good
Rooms were clean and comfortable.
What could be improved: I was really disappointed that I could not take my son with me to the roof top restaurant. He is 17 and to not be able to grab food and a drink was really disappointing and forced us to have to leave the hotel to eat when we were very tired. Also disappointed in the cost to eat breakfast. Pretty pricey!
Great location and lovely room
Location was brilliant, and we had a great room on 9th floor overlooking 8th Avenue. It looked perhaps newly refurbished - welcoming, well designed for a relatively small space. The staff were delightful and very helpful. The view from the rooftop bar was great too.
What could be improved: The breakfast option which we did not use - expensive, but there are plenty of options nearby. We had large soft bags that opened at the top. The space would have been more challenging with hard shell cases.
Great stay in NYC
Great location close to Times Square, Broadway, Madison Square Garden, Liberty Bagel, Madman Espresso for great coffee.
What could be improved: A few rough sleepers etc on the street but common for this area.
Great few days away, would stay again
Location was great, close to major subway interchange. Staff were helpful and rooms were clean and comfortable
