I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Aliz Hotel Times Square, I wasn’t expecting much from another midtown hotel. But this place actually surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked on West 40th Street in Hell’s Kitchen, which means you’re close enough to the Times Square chaos when you want it, but far enough away that you can actually sleep at night without neon lights bleeding through your curtains.

The thing about this four-star spot is that it gets the details right in ways that matter. The lobby has this warm, almost residential feel – not the sterile marble-and-chrome situation you see everywhere else in midtown. I mean, you can tell they put thought into making it feel less like a corporate pit stop. The rooms are compact (this is New York, after all), but they’re smart about the space. Good lighting, decent bathroom counter space, and – this might sound small but it’s huge – outlets exactly where you need them. The beds are genuinely comfortable, not just hotel-comfortable, if you know what I mean.

What really sold me on this place is the neighborhood vibe. Hell’s Kitchen has shed that gritty reputation completely, and staying here puts you right in the middle of some fantastic food spots that tourists usually miss. You’ve got Ninth Avenue literally around the corner with all those little ethnic restaurants, plus you’re walking distance to the High Line and Hudson River Park when you need to escape the concrete for a minute. The subway access is solid too – Port Authority might not be glamorous, but it’s incredibly convenient, and you’ve got multiple train lines right there. I’ve stayed here during both quiet winter weeks and peak summer tourist season, and the staff consistently knows their stuff about the area. They’ll point you toward the good happy hour spots and away from the tourist traps without being pushy about it. Honestly, for what you get in this location, it feels like you’re getting away with something – especially considering how much mediocre hotels charge just for having a Times Square address.
